What Is a Pleated Filter Cartridge?

FiltEdge pleated filter cartridges are ideal for your high-efficiency dust removal system, especially for locations where space is limited or where low emissions are critical. Unlike traditional filter bags, pleated filter cartridges do not require additional bag cage support and feature a rigid or semi-rigid structure reinforced with impregnated resin to ensure a stable shape and a larger filtration area, allowing your dust removal system to perform better.

Its outstanding surface filtration not only improves filtration efficiency, but also effectively reduces initial pressure drop, helping you reduce energy consumption and extend equipment life. Choose FiltEdge pleated filter cartridges to make your dust collection system run more consistently and efficiently while reducing maintenance costs.

Pleated Filter Cartridge Filter Media Options and Composite Structures

Your pleated filter cartridges typically use rigid or reinforced nonwoven media, often in composite structures.

For elevated temperature or chemically aggressive environments, PPS ,aramid or PTFE-based nonwovens may be used, usually combined with reinforcement layers to maintain structural integrity. While polyester spun cartridge filters and polyester pleated cartridge filters with impregnated resin are used more widely.

Currently, many different fiber types, combinations, composites, and post-treatment methods are used in industrial dust collection pleated cartridge filters; the examples shown here represent only a normal portion of them for you.

Pleated Filter Cartridge vs. Filter Bag Solutions

Pleated-Filter-Cartridge-vs.-Filter-Bag-Solutions
Pleated-Filter-Cartridge-vs.-Filter-Bag-Solutions

Compared with your filter bag–based solutions, pleated filter cartridges represent a different engineering approach, not simply a different format.

Key distinctions include:

  • Pleated filter cartridges rely on rigid geometry and surface filtration, while filter bags rely on flexible media and depth filtration (or membrane-assisted surface filtration)
  • Pleated filter cartridges typically operate at higher system filtration velocities and lower effective media air-to-cloth.
  • Filter bags offer greater tolerance to dust variability and operating fluctuations
  • No matter standard filter bags or pleated filter bags have more filter media options
  • Pleated filter cartridges need professional specific designed cartridge dust collector.

As a result, pleated filter cartridges are best viewed as a high-efficiency solution for controlled conditions, rather than a universal replacement for filter bags.

Pleated Filter Cartridge Typical Applications and System Types

Pleated-Filter-Cartridge-Typical-Applications-and-System-Types

Pleated filter cartridges are commonly used in following conditions:

  • Industrial production facilities with dust-laden gas streams entering compact industrial dust collectors located in limited spaces.
  • Continuous or intermittent dust-generating processes

Industries and applications:

  • Metal processing and welding fumes
  • Cement, mineral, and chemical dust
  • Battery materials, carbon dust, powder handling
  • Boilers, incinerators, heat-treatment exhaust (medium temperature)

These applications typically share the following characteristics:

  • High total dust mass loading handling capacity (5-200kg/h)
  • Relatively low inlet dust loading concentration(≤5-10g/Nm³)
  • Reverse-direction flow pulse-jet cleaning (high & low energy pressure) required normally
  • Long-term continuous operation
  • Dry, free-flowing particulate
  • Stable airflow and process conditions

The above suggestions are not exhaustive or absolute and are for your reference only. Given the complexity of your real dust collection applications, please consult with FiltEdge experts for a thorough evaluation.

Pleated Filter Cartridge Basic Structural Features and Self-Supporting Design

The defining characteristic of a FiltEdge pleated filter cartridge is its self-supporting design and structural rigidity.

Typical structural elements include:

  • Rigid or semi-rigid filter media
  • Integrated internal support core (metal or plastic)
  • End caps bonded to the filter media pack
  • Stable pleats, with a pleat spacing of 10-25mm and a pleat depth of 15-50mm (dependable).
  • Integrated circumferential reinforcement banding structure for locking, preventing fatigue damage.

This structure allows the cartridge to remain dimensional stable with more effective filtration area during your operation and pulse-jet cleaning, even at relatively higher system filtration velocities.

However, this rigidity also reduces tolerance for deformation, dust bridging, and incomplete dust release, making your proper application selection essential.

The information above is not exhaustive for you; please contact FiltEdge experts for more information.

Pleated Filter Cartridge Application Limitations and Operating Considerations

Despite their advantages, FiltEdge pleated filter cartridges have clear limitations.

They are generally not suitable for:

  • Sticky, oily(>0.3%), or hygroscopic dust
  • High-moisture gas streams
  • High dust concentration (>15-20g/Nm³)
  • Particle size is either too small or too large (<5μm or >150-200μm).
  • The dust particles are sharp, rigid, angular, and highly abrasive.
  • The dust particles have high hardness, with a Mohs hardness of ≥ 6.
  • Processes with large fluctuations in airflow or dust characteristics

In such conditions, surface blinding, rapid pressure rise, and reduced cleaning effectiveness can significantly shorten your pleated cartridge filter service life.

The information above is not comprehensive; a thorough assessment and evaluation based on your specific dust collection conditions are required. Please contact FiltEdge experts for further discussion.

Pleated Filter Cartridge Cleaning Methods and Performance Considerations

Pulse-Jet Cleaning

Pulse-jet cleaning is the primary cleaning method for pleated filter cartridges in industrial applications.

Effective cleaning requires:

  • Proper high-energy pulse-jet pressure (0.4-0.6MPa)and duration(0.1-0.2s);
  • Or low-energy reverse-direction flow pulse pressure (0.05-0.3 MPa) and duration (0.2-0.8s);
  • Correct nozzle alignment;
  • Matched solenoid pulse valve port size;
  • Uniform airflow distribution across the cartridge surface

Because pleated filter cartridges rely heavily on surface filtration, low-pressure and middle-frequency pulse cleaning is suggested to get better cleaning effectiveness and extend its service life directly

Other Cleaning Approaches

In light-load or intermittent systems, alternative cleaning methods are rarely used. However, these are generally limited to niche applications and are not suitable for high-load industrial environments.

All dust cleaning methods and parameter settings are designed to achieve a balance between effectively removing the dust cake and maintaining the pleated filter cartridge’s strength. Precise adjustments of these variables are necessary based on your actual dust collection conditions. Please contact FiltEdge experts for assistance in making these determinations.

Pleated Filter Cartridge Service Life and Maintenance Factors

The service life of pleated filter cartridges is influenced by your:

  • Dust characteristics
  • Dust load and concentration
  • Filtration velocity
  • Cleaning efficiency (Pulse pressure, duration, interval, solenoid pulse valve port size)
  • Proper selection of filter media options with right surface properties
  • Air flow distribution
  • Suitable operation(Pre-coating except for pleated membrane filter cartridge and balanced pressure drop)
  • Stable system and gas condition
  • On-time maintenance

Once surface blinding or embedded dust develops, your pleated filter cartridges typically exhibit limited recovery, making timely replacement critical to maintaining your system performance.

What is the difference between self-supporting structures and filter cages?

A filter cage is a separate supporting structure located inside the filter bag, made of carbon steel or stainless steel wire.

A self-supporting filter cartridge is a structure completely integrated with the filter cartridge, usually located inside the cartridge, and made of plastic, carbon steel, or stainless steel expanded mesh or perforated plate.

Their function is to support the filter element and prevent the your filter bag from collapsing or pleat from deforming.

If you would like to learn more, please contact FiltEdge experts.

Why do pleated products require reinforcement rings or banding?

Reinforcement rings or banding are critical for pleated filter products to ensure structural stability, maintain filtration efficiency, and withstand cleaning cycles. They prevent pleat deformation, increase filtration capacity, and improve service life.

Are reinforcement bands for pleated filter cartridges the same as support rings used on pleated filter bags?

No. Although both serve a reinforcement function, they are structurally and functionally different.

If you would like to learn more about the differences between industrial dust collector filter cartridges and other filtration products, please contact FiltEdge experts for technical consultation.

Are pleated filter cartridges suitable for baghouse dust collectors?

In most cases, no.

Pleated filter cartridges are generally not suitable for your standard baghouse dust collectors. Baghouses are designed for flexible filter bags and cages, while cartridges with rigid and integrated structure require different cleaning mechanics, nozzle positioning, and airflow patterns. Proper system redesign or modification for your current baghouse is necessary for reliable operation, otherwise installing cartridges in a existed baghouse can lead to inefficient cleaning, rapid pressure drop increase, and premature cartridge failure.

To elevate your current baghouse condition, please contact FiltEdge experts for assistance.

How does filtration velocity affect pleated filter cartridge service life?

Filtration velocity has a direct impact on cartridge service life. When the velocity is too high, dust strikes the pleat peaks more aggressively, increasing abrasion and accelerating fatigue of the filter media, especially for pleated membrane filter cartridge. High velocity also causes uneven dust loading, faster pressure drop rise, and more frequent cleaning cycles, all of which shorten service life.

Lower and well-controlled filtration velocity promotes uniform dust cake formation, gentler cleaning, and more stable long-term performance.

Would you like to know which range of filtration velocity is better for your specific dust collector, please contact FiltEdge experts for technical consultation.

Can pleated filter cartridges handle high dust loading conditions?

Pleated filter cartridges can handle moderate dust loading, but they are generally not recommended for very high dust load or heavy particulate loading conditions. Excessive dust concentration increases surface accumulation on pleat peaks, leading to rapid pressure drop rise, incomplete cleaning, and early surface blinding. Suggested range for dust loading handling capacity of 5-200kg/h, and dust load concentration of ≤5-10g/Nm³.

In applications with high dust loading, standard filter bags or pleated filter bags with wider pleat spacing typically provide better tolerance and longer service life.

Still unsure which type of filter element is more suitable for your specific condition, please get in touch with FiltEdge experts for assistant.

What is the difference between pulse-jet cleaning and reverse air cleaning for your pleated filter cartridges?

Strictly speaking, your industrial pleated filter cartridges do not have a reverse air cleaning method like bag filters. The reason some people refer to it as “reverse air cleaning” is due to a misunderstanding. During cleaning, the compressed air pulse jet is directed from the inside of the industrial dust filter cartridge outwards, which is the opposite direction to the flow of dust-laden flue gas during filtration (from outside to inside). This reverse direction of the pulsed airflow is mistakenly referred to as reverse air cleaning, confusing it with the reverse air cleaning method used in bag filters.

Dust collector filter cartridges primarily utilize pulse jet cleaning, which can be divided into high-pressure and low-pressure cleaning depending on your actual operating conditions. People often confuse low-pressure pulse jet cleaning with reverse air cleaning.

If you are interested in different types of dust collector cleaning methods, please contact with FiltEdge experts for more details.

Is membrane-laminated media recommended for pleated filter cartridges?

In many applications, yes — but only under suitable conditions.
Membrane-laminated media can reduce particle penetration, stabilize pressure drop, improve surface filtration and emission control. However, aggressive cleaning intensity or high dust loading may cause membrane damage at pleat peaks, reducing service life, careful application evaluation is needed for your pleated membrane filter cartridge.

To learn more about membrane knowledge and application tips, please consult with FiltEdge experts

What causes premature failure of your pleated filter cartridges?

Premature failure of pleated filter cartridges is usually caused by a combination of factors such as high filtration air-to-cloth, excessive cleaning intensity, unsuitable dust characteristics, improper gas moisture, elevated temperature, and uneven airflow distribution etc, which can lead to accelerated wear at pleat peaks, dust bridging between pleats, incomplete dust release, and rapid pressure drop increase. In severe cases, membrane cracking or structural fatigue may occur, significantly shortening service life.

If you expect to avoid premature failure happen as possible as you can, please contact with FiltEdge experts for technical elevation.
