Key Features of FiltEdge Beverage Filter Cartridges

FiltEdge beverage filter cartridges with PES and Nylon 66 membrane cartridges for end-use decontamination applications achieve 99.999% absolute retention of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the bacteria that affect the quality of wine.

FiltEdge beverage cartridges are made from high purity, high temperature polypropylene or special engineering plastics, fused together using full hot-melt, non-adhesive welding technology. After 30 minutes of continuous sterilization with saturated steam at 134°C and more than 100 cycles, the structure remains stable, with no cracking of the end caps, rupture of the main membrane, or displacement of the interlayers.

FiltEdge beverage filter cartridges feature an Optimized pleat geometry. As an example, the effective membrane area of a conventional 40-inch PES sterilizing cartridge is nearly 25% greater than that of a comparable cartridge on the market.

All raw materials used in the FiltEdge beverage filter cartridge series are 100% compliant with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) 21 CFR 177-182 material exposure standards, and are certified to the European (EC) No 1935/2004 food contact material regulations.
FiltEdge Advanced Auto-Thermal Bonding and Micro-Pore Phase Inversion Technology
FiltEdge has introduced the world’s first-class Auto-Thermal Bonding Processing System, combined with the exclusive Micro-Pore Phase Inversion Technology, to provide the most advanced technology in the beverage filtration industry. During the high temperature SIP (steam in-line sterilization) or CIP chemical cleaning process, it is very easy for the adhesive layer to soften, dissolve or release harmful leachate, which can lead to the waste of the whole batch of beverages. FiltEdge introduces the German high-precision numerical-controlled hot-melt machine, which is able to control the temperature of the hot-melt knives (with a high degree of precision) and the high-frequency mechanical pressure through the micro-computer. During the assembly process, the equipment locally heats the polypropylene end caps and the edge junction of the folded membrane module to a molten state within seconds, and then under specific air pressure, the molecular chains penetrate into each other and combine perfectly, forming an integrated seamless monolithic structure after cooling. For the manufacturing of the core membrane, FiltEdge employs an advanced Phase Inversion process to produce highly asymmetric polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. By precisely regulating the instantaneous solidification bath temperature, humidity, and solvent exchange rate of the polymer solution in a precision casting machine, the film formation process results in a microscopically perfect “funnel-shaped” asymmetric pore size structure.

Applications of FiltEdge Beverage Filter Cartridges
FiltEdge beverage filter cartridges can be used for bottled water purification, Beer and Wine Clarification, Carbonated Soft Drinks and Carbonated Soft Drink

FiltEdge utilizes a strict grading protection mechanism. The security filtration system consisting of 5μm-1μm FiltEdge PP Pleated Precision Filter Cartridges is designed to reduce turbidity to less than 0.2 NTU by retaining resin particles and fine grit that may have escaped from the previous process. 100% sterility control is achieved, and microorganisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which may contaminate the water, are completely intercepted.

FiltEdge Nylon 66 membrane cartridges are naturally hydrophilic and weakly positively charged, and are highly effective at capturing microscopic yeasts, acetic acid bacteria, and unstable large proteins in wine at 0.45μm to 0.65μm, effectively preventing secondary sedimentation of red wines in the bottle.

For syrup preparation, FiltEdge recommends the use of high strength PP folded high flow cartridges. In the high temperature molasses process at 85°C, the filter cartridges are subjected to high pressure drops, and FiltEdge filter cartridges are designed with a robust center support tube and jacket construction that maintains pore size under high pressure differentials and a filtration efficiency (Beta rating) of over 1000.

The FiltEdge deploys a fine combination of deep glass fiber precision cartridges and large pore size PP folded cartridges. The first stage glass fiber cartridge utilizes its 85% porosity to retain coarse pulp fibers and most insoluble pectin in the juice, and its graded pore size distribution allows for the passage of small molecule nutrients, while taking advantage of deep filtration to avoid the rapid formation of a surface cake layer.

Testimonials
Integrity testing is performed to evaluate cartridges for microscopic breakage and as a means of ensuring sterilization, FiltEdge sterilizing grade cartridges directly quantify the maximum pore size of the membrane through bubble point and diffusion flow testing. In the event that a cartridge breaks during the SIP process due to mishandling, the tester can immediately detect this through pressure drop anomalies, thus preventing 100% of contaminated liquids from reaching the market.
High temperature syrups are characterized by high viscosity and high solids content. Firstly, we recommend to use FiltEdge Glass Fiber Deep Precision Cartridge with very high dirt-holding capacity as the first and second stage pre-filtration, which is used to devour carbon black and organic colloids efficiently. A PP folded cartridge with a large pore size is used at the end of the process to intercept residual fine carbon particles and ensure continuous production at high flow rates.
The difference between the two is primarily due to the surface chemistry of the material and the charge adsorption effect. Nylon 66 has a weak positive charge (zeta potential), which makes it ideal for wine polishing filtration because of its ability to physically retain and at the same time electrostatically adsorb negatively charged fine colloids and unstable proteins. PES membranes, on the other hand, have a very low protein binding rate and are designed for systems that require high recovery rates and rapid sterilization.
